Maintaining your Wood Bowl & Care Tips
OUR PROCESS
The wood used to create our products is always locally sourced as recently cut, green wood. Each of our bowls is made of a single piece of wood. In order to do that, the larger log is processed into smaller pieces called “blanks” using a chainsaw and bandsaw. This makes the wood a suitable size and balanced enough to mount on the wood lathe. The blank is then turned on the lathe and its shape is created. After an even wall thickness is achieved, it is prepped for our air drying process. Time is of the essence here, as drying too quickly will cause cracks and checks in the piece. After a couple of months, the bowl is dry and ready for final sanding, creating a smooth polished surface that is ready to accept finish. Tung oil is then hand rubbed into the grain, bringing out all of the beautiful color the piece has to offer. It will then receive two more coats of Tung oil and cure over the next month before it is complete.
CLEANING
To wash your bowl simply clean it with mild dishwashing soap and warm water. Rinse and dry with a clean cloth immediately.
WOOD CARE
Your new wooden bowl has been hand finished with a minimum of 3 hand rubbed coats of Pure/Dark Tung Oil* (Real Milk Paint Company). Among the beauty it adds to each piece this Tung oil offers the benefits of being completely natural, FDA approved for food contact and works as a flexible water-repellant finish.
MAINTENANCE
After enough time and/or washes your bowl might begin to become rough in texture or dull in appearance. To help maintain its natural wood beauty and integrity, occasionally recondition your wooden bowl with a pure Tung oil.
SPECIAL CONSIDERATIONS
The wood used to create your piece comes from a tree that has taken many years to grow. With a little attention and special care it can be enjoyed for many more years to come. The following are just a few things to avoid in order to make it last a lifetime.
DO NOT;
- Submerge, soak or leave water in the piece.
- Put your bowl in the dishwasher, microwave, oven, or refrigerator.
- Leave in direct sunlight, this encourages movement of the wood and can cause cracks due to the stress.
- Use olive or vegetable oils to recondition the piece as they will spoil and become rancid.
- Leave over-ripened fruit, beets or red grapes in the piece as these will create permanent stains over time.
PURE/DARK TUNG OIL
DIRECTIONS: 1. Make sure the surface is clean and free of dust and debris. 2. Apply pure tung oil to a lint free cloth sparingly. (cloth should be saturated but not to the point where oil could be squeezed out) 3. Apply a thin coat by rubbing oiled cloth on the surface and working the oil into the grain. 4. After 5 minutes, wipe the surface with a clean dry piece of cloth. 5. Allow this coat 24 hours to cure. 6. Hang oil soaked rags outside to dry before disposing.
*(It will be stated in the product description if a piece is finished with anything other than Pure/Dark Tung oil.)
